HR Thoughts…Week Ending 11.17.2023

We’re at the end of another week, so it’s time for some HR Thoughts.

  1. Prioritizing your people inherently means you’re prioritizing your company’s work.

You can’t sustain a strong team if you don’t prioritize them. Your team will burn out, they’ll seek out other options. They won’t perform at peak levels. The investment in knowing and understanding the needs of your people is always worth it. Learning this information can take many forms. Insights from manager 1-on-1s, town hall style Q&As, engagement surveys, open-door policy, listening tours. Pick a path, and start learning.

  2. Staying on top of the nitty gritty of HR always wins.

HR is so much more than compliance, and forms, and folders and files. But, being on top of those things makes a world of difference. If you’re growing, or fundraising or thinking about a merger, these things are going to come up. When you’re on top of it, you’re not left scrambling trying make magic. You go to the data or information you need and get it to where it needs to go. It’s not fun. It’s tedious. But it’s a must.

  3. Culture takes time. Work on it!

Everyone says they want to build a great culture, but what exactly does that mean? If you’re thinking free snacks and bring your dog to work days, that’s not it. Can it support the other work you do to build good culture? Yes! What do you want the people who work on your team to think about when they think of being on your team? Is it something positive? Do they feel like they are contributing to something they care about? Do they feel like they are making an impact on something bigger than themselves? Do they feel celebrated and supported? That’s culture! And those other elements are sprinkles on top. Make the cake first. That’s what everyone will remember.
