HR Thoughts…Week Ending 3.22.2024

We’re at the end of another week, so it’s time for some HR Thoughts.

  1. Interviewing is hard. Companies must do their part to ease the burden.

People are struggling. People are literally submitting more than 1,000 resumes and interviewing I don’t even want to say how many times. And then not getting an offer after putting in a lot of work through multiple rounds of sometimes unnecessary interviews. This has to stop. I’ve been there myself in the past. I’ve gone through multiple rounds of interviews only for a decision to be made to not move forward with a hire at the end of the day. It sucks. As an employer, do your part to make the process a little easier and less burdensome for individuals who make it to an interview stage. That’s not to say don’t do your due diligence. Instead, do it in a way that is reasonable. Be respectful of time and the circumstances that people are navigating. Build a thoughtful process that fro the start introduces interviewees to a company they’d want to work for. It’s possible!

  2. A strong culture can get your organization through some very tough times.

I say it all the time to just about anyone who list. If you have employees, you have to give time to building a strong work culture. It’s important to your business and the work that you do, and also to the people on your team. The people who are doing that work. When you put intention behind culture, it shines through during challenges. And the challenges will come at some point.

  3. Development opportunities for your team have to be prioritized.

Everyone wants to grow. They may love the work that they do, but they want to grow in some way. Maybe it’s being a better speaker or stronger with excel. You won’t know where employees want to grow if you don’t ask. But it can’t stop with just asking. Build development opportunities into your budgets and plans for your team members. Prioritize it with your managers and senior leaders. This is culture building in and of itself. And it also sets you up to continue to have a talented, highly skilled team of engaged employees.
